About a dozen of ProMusica Arizona’s musicians are compensated for serving as leaders for their respective instrumental sections, an essential part of orchestra management. Just what does a section leader do, you may ask? A section leader, or principal player, leads their instrument section throughout rehearsals and performances, communicates Conductor Patti Graetz’s intentions, and ensures the section performs cohesively. The section leader is often the most skilled musician in their section and may be responsible for playing any solo passages for their instrument during performances. Section leaders must maintain impeccable technique, sound quality, and expression and work to ensure musicians in their section perform at their highest level.

In line with many other orchestras, ProMusica Arizona is seeking financial support for these talented leaders from donors who wish to sponsor them. Would you be willing to donate $1000 to sponsor a section leader to assist PMAZ’s fundraising efforts? You will have an opportunity to meet and get to know the section leader(s) you sponsor, your name will be listed in each concert program and you will be recognized in our annual report for this season. Rebecca Ann (“Becky”) Borrell

August 22, 1959 – December 14, 2024

20th Anniversary Celebration

April 1 and 2, 2023

 
The 2022-2023 season concluded with ProMusica Arizona’s 20th Anniversary Celebration featuring the world-premiere of Saguaro Song by Arizona composer Craig Bohmler, well-known for Arizona Opera’s Riders of the Purple Sage. Saguaro Song is a suite of five songs for choir and orchestra with texts by award-winning Canadian author Marion Adler who uses the iconic saguaro cactus as a metaphor for the seasons of life. In addition, ProMusica Arizona presented A World Without Boundaries by Timothy Powell with texts by American astronauts. The piece was commissioned for ProMusica Arizona’s 15th anniversary season. Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure on This Shining Night,” Ola Gjielo’s “Sunrise” (“Gloria”) from Sunrise Mass, and other musical gems were featured to round out the festivities.
